12 Bar Blues Bible by Andrew D. Gordon Due to the overwhelming demand of my book "100 Ultimate Blues Riffs", I decided to author another book solely on blues piano/keyboard playing. Most Blues tunes are made up of a 12 bar progression and I thought that a book that show the various types and styles of 12 bar blues progressions would be useful to musicians and students. The book includes over 50 examples that cover a range of styles, (blues, jazz-blues, minor-blues, funky-blues, country-blues, rock-blues, latin-blues, gospel-blues), tempos, rhythms and key signatures. There is a brief description, followed by each of the examples perfectly notated, along with the chord symbols. The latter part of the book contains a chapter on the "Basics Of Blues Improvisation" for anyone who is just starting out in the world of Improvising using the Blues as a starting point. At the end of the CD there are seven jam - along tracks, each about three minutes in length so that you may try out examples in the book or your own improvisational ideas along with a rhythm section of organ, bass and drums.

The often-controversial Ike Turner is unfortunately best known for his behind-the-scenes contributions to R&B and rock & roll (he claims his Rocket 88 was the first rock-&-roll record) and his violence toward his former wife, the singer Tina Turner. But this set is evidence that, after more than six decades as a musician, he's still more than capable of producing a compelling collection of down-and-dirty blues and funk. Starting with the deep groove of Gimme Back My Wig and a nod to his roots on the jump blues of Caledonia, Turner also revisits A Love Like Yours, which he and Tina first recorded in 1966 with Phil Spector. And his unapologetic, gospel-tinged Jesus Loves Me points an accusing finger back at his unforgiving critics.

Broadcasting the Blues: Black Blues in the Segregation Era is based on Paul Oliver's award-winning radio broadcasts from the BBC that were created over several decades. It traces the social history of the blues in America, from its birth in the rural South through the heyday of sound recordings. Noted blues scholar Paul Oliver draws on decades of research and personal interviews with performers—some of whom he "discovered" and recorded for the first time—to draw a picture of how the blues aesthetic developed, giving new insights into the role blues played in American society before racial integration. The book begins by outlining the history of the blues from African music through country stomps, ragtime songs, and field hollers. From the heroic figures of black folksong—including the steel-driving railroad worker John Henry and the destructive Boll Weevil—to the content of the emerging blues, the author discusses the "meaning" behind the often coded words of the blues, evoking topics such as playful sexuality, magic and medicine, the stresses of segregation, and commentary on national events. Finally, the author traces the history of blues documentation, showing how our views of the early blues have been shaped through a complex interplay of social forces, and indicating possible lines for future research.
