Binding: Hardcover Author: Iskra Nunez Language: English Publication Date: 2013-08-19 Number of Pages: 144 Publisher: Routledge Critical Realist Activity Theory Provides An Exciting New Contribution To The New Studies In Critical Realism And Education Series By Showing How The Nature Of Learning Is Tantamount To The Critical Realist Notion Of The Dialectic. The Science Of Learning Is Too Important To Leave Solely To The Sciences; It Needs Philosophy As Well. The Task Of This Book Is To Take A Further Step And Clear The Conceptual Field For An Ontologically Grounded View Of The Science Of Learning Through Critical Realism, Making Use Of Dialectical Critical Realism And The Philosophy Of Meta-Reality, As Well As Basic Critical Realism. The Objective Of The Book Is Neither To Accommodate The Nature Of Learning To Strategies And Techniques, Nor To Adjust To The Demands Of Institutions And Authorities. Its Key Goal Is To Explain How The Very Nature Of Learning Constitutes Itself; That Is, Its Aim Is To Explain How A Stratum Of Learning Emerges Out Of The Need To Absent Something That Has Been Left Out In Human Reality. In This Precise Sense, The Book Does Much More Than Simply Reveal The Aspects Of Reality That Have Been Omitted From The Conceptualization Of Learning, It Helps To Reformulate A Proper Understanding Of The Nature Of Learning. An Implication Of This Understanding Of Learning Is That It Begins To Advance The Fundamental Question Of What It Means To Be A Human Being. T

  • Adult Education and Learning in a Precarious Age: The Hamburg Declaration Revisited
UNESCO's 1997 CONFINTEA V conference in Hamburg has been described as the high-water mark of international adult education policy-making. It produced one of the most utopian statements about adult education and learning of the past 25 years: the Hamburg Declaration on Adult Learning and Agenda for the Future. Adult education was declared key to the twenty-first century in order to build "a world in which violent conflict is replaced by dialogue, a culture of peace based on justice. and the creation of a learning society committed to social justice and general well-being." However, the Declaration also recognized that there were many practical challenges to its implementation as profound changes were occurring in social, economic, environmental, and political spheres. In this volume, North American and international scholars critically assess how far the visionary statements of the Hamburg Declaration have been advanced and implemented. They: Review the recent development of the 10 themes of the Agenda for the FutureExplore their local and global achievements through considering the results of the 2009 CONFINTEA VI conference and other related policy developmentsOutline what is still necessary to realize the Declaration's goals. This is 138th volume of this quarterly report series. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of adult and continuing education settings, such

  • Addressing Tensions and Dilemmas in Inclusive Education: Living With Uncertainty
Based on extensive research, "Addressing Tensions and Dilemmas in Inclusive Education" presents a contemporary and critical analysis of the interaction between different perspectives and positions in the field of inclusive education. Referring to existing attitudes on the education of children and young people with learning difficulties and disabilities, Professor Norwich argues that despite the appeal of inclusion as a single powerful position, its practical realisation involves tensions and dilemmas that have to be addressed and resolved. This core analysis is illustrated by a review of relevant national and international concepts, principles, research and practices drawing on literature in areas of current interest and concern, such as: identification and classification; current national and international conceptions; pedagogic and curriculum issues; organisation of schooling; parental and student perspectives; the contribution of research to policy and practice. Engaging with the fundamental issues in the field and providing a coherent perspective that recognises and justifies the inter-connection between specialised and general school provision, this accessible and timely book will be of interest to all researchers and students of inclusive education.

  • Comeback America: Turning the Country Around and Restoring Fiscal Responsibility
He's one of America's most capable, canny, candid, and independent financial experts. Now David M. Walker sounds a call to action. Comeback America is a tough-minded, innovative, inspiring guide to help us avoid the approaching economic abyss and put the country back on track again. As comptroller general of the United States and head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO)-"the nation's top auditor"-Walker warned Congress and the administration as the federal surplus became a giant deficit under George W. Bush. As president and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, he now works full-time to raise public awareness regarding mounting debt burdens being imposed on future generations. Comeback America is his crucial manifesto, a way for President Obama to end out-of-control government spending and reform our tax, retirement, health care, defense, and other systems-before it's too late. Walker believes that by 2030, absent significant reforms to current government programs and policies, federal taxes could double from current levels, meaning less money and poorer education for kids-which will hurt families along with our nation's economic strength and position in the world. If our foreign creditors-such as China-decide to buy fewer of our Treasury bonds, interest rates will rise and cars and homes will become less affordable. But it doesn't have to be that way. Comeback America shows how we can return to our founding principles of fiscal responsibility and stewardship fo

  • The Birth of Modern Politics: Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, and the Election of 1828

  • The Birth of Modern Politics: Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, and the Election of 1828
The 1828 presidential election, which pitted Major General Andrew Jackson against incumbent John Quincy Adams, has long been hailed as a watershed moment in American political history. It was the contest in which an unlettered, hot-tempered southwestern frontiersman, trumpeted by his supporters as a genuine man of the people, soundly defeated a New England "aristocrat" whose education and political resume were as impressive as any ever seen in American public life. It was, many historians have argued, the country's first truly democratic presidential election. It was also the election that opened a Pandora's box of campaign tactics, including coordinated media, get-out-the-vote efforts, fund-raising, organized rallies, opinion polling, campaign paraphernalia, ethnic voting blocs, "opposition research," and smear tactics. In The Birth of Modern Politics, Parsons shows that the Adams-Jackson contest also began a national debate that is eerily contemporary, pitting those whose cultural, social, and economic values were rooted in community action for the common good against those who believed the common good was best served by giving individuals as much freedom as possible to promote their own interests. The book offers fresh and illuminating portraits of both Adams and Jackson and reveals how, despite their vastly different backgrounds, they had started out with many of the same values, admired one another, and had often been allies in common causes. But by 1828, caught up in a

  • Graphic Justice: Intersections of Comics and Law

  • The intersections of law and contemporary culture are vital for comprehending the meaning and significance of law in today's world. Far from being unsophisticated mass entertainment, comics and graphic fiction both imbue our contemporary culture, and are themselves imbued, with the concerns of law and justice. Accordingly, and spanning a wide variety of approaches and topics from an international array of contributors, Graphic Justice draws comics and graphic fiction into the range of critical resources available to the academic study of law. The first book to do this, "Graphic Justice" broadens our understanding of law and justice as part of our human world-a world that is inhabited not simply by legal concepts and institutions alone, but also by narratives, stories, fantasies, images, and other cultural articulations of human meaning. Engaging with key legal issues (including copyright, education, legal ethics, biomedical regulation, and legal personhood) and exploring critical issues in criminal justice and perspectives on international rights, law and justice-all through engagement with comics and graphic fiction-the collection showcases the vast breadth of potential that the medium holds. "Graphic Justice" will be of interest to academics and postgraduate students in: cultural legal studies; law and the image; law, narrative and literature; law and popular culture; cultural criminology; as well as cultural and comics studies more generally.

  • Community Education and Crime Prevention

  • Community Education and Crime Prevention
Scholars in various disciplines are recommending comprehensive measures to solve multiple societal as well as individual problems. The philosophy of "community education" has been overlooked but is a workable, comprehensive approach to addressing crime. As used in this book, community education is a philosophy, process, and program comprised of three overriding and interrelated elements: community empowerment, community problem-solving, and the effort to involve all community members in the pursuit of lifelong learning. The Hyde Park neighborhood in St. Louis has one of the highest rates of reported drug sales and high rates of homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, arson, and burglary. The community lays claim to several crime-inducing variables including population loss, a high percentage of population shift resulting in a higher percentage of black population and boarded-up housing units, a high rate of unemployment, a very low per capita income and a high percentage of citizens living below the poverty line, and a high percentage of female-headed households. Nevertheless, the people of Hyde Park are participating in a crime prevention approach that is applicable to all communities. Insights to urban life and problem solving are provided by community members, covering such topics as policing and how it can be improved. These insights and others offered by the author are supported by theories and philosophies found in the literature. In the process of solving their own prob

  • Human Rights Education and Peacebuilding: A comparative study

  • This book assesses the role of human rights education (HRE) in the peacebuilding field. Today, most governments, international organisations and non-governmental organisations recognise the importance of human rights in peace- and democracy-building activities in post-conflict regions. However, compared with other components of peacebuilding, little attention and funding have been given to the cultivation of human rights knowledge and skills within these populations. Almost nothing has been committed to understanding how HRE is best accomplished in such difficult circumstances. " Human Rights Education and Peacebuilding" demonstrates the promise of HRE programs to help bring about peace within challenging post-conflict contexts. Each chapter of this book (a) identifies the short and medium term impacts of seven different HRE programs on their respective target groups, and (b) provides an analysis of the peculiar local contextual factors that influenced each program s rationale for human rights education. More specifically, each chapter addresses these critical questions: - How are communities around the world using HRE to help rebuild their lives in the aftermath of an armed conflict? - How does HRE respond local problems and needs? How similar are the human rights impacts in the different projects? - How can we understand the promise and challenges associated with HRE as a component of community peace-building? This book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding,

  • The Mathematics of Sex: How Biology and Society Conspire to Limit Talented Women and Girls
Nearly half of all physicians and biologists are females, as are the majority of new psychologists, veterinarians, and dentists, suggesting that women have achieved equality with men in the workforce. But the ranks of professionals in math-intensive careers remain lopsidedly male; up to 93% of tenure-track academic positions in some of the most mathematically-oriented fields are held by men. Three main explanations have been advanced to explain the dearth of women in math-intensive careers, and in The Mathematics of Sex, Stephen J. Ceci and Wendy M. Williams describe and dissect the evidence for each. The first explanation involves innate ability-male brains are physiologically optimized to perform advanced mathematical and spatial operations; the second is that social and cultural biases inhibit females' training and success in mathematical fields; the third alleges that women are less interested in math-intensive careers than are men, preferring people-oriented pursuits. Drawing on research in endocrinology, economics, sociology, education, genetics, and psychology to arrive at their own unique, evidence-based conclusion, the authors argue that the problem is due to certain choices that women (but not men) are compelled to make in our society; that women tend not to favor math-intensive careers for certain reasons, and that sex differences in math and spatial ability cannot adequately explain the scarcity of women in these fields. The Mathematics of Sex represents the first

Binding: Paperback Author: Jane Kelsey Language: English Publication Date: 2008-09-08 Number of Pages: 416 Publisher: Routledge-Cavendish Serving Whose Interests Explores The Political Economy Of Trade In Services Agreements From A Critical Legal Perspective. The Controversy Surrounding The General Agreement On Trade In Services (Gats) And Its Variants At The Regional And Bilateral Levels Can, It Is Argued, Be Seen As A Clash Between Two Paradigms. For Most Of The Twentieth Century, Under Welfare States And State Socialism, These Services Were Viewed From A Local And National Perspective As Embodying A Mix Of Economic, Social And Cultural Dimensions And Were Managed By The State Through Strong Regulation And Direct Ownership And Delivery. That Socially Based And State-Centred Approach Has Been Progressively Displaced Since The 1980S Through Neoliberal Policies Of Privatisation, Deregulation And Liberalisation, The Transnationalisation Of Finance And Production, And New Technologies. The Internationalisation Of Services Markets Hasâ Thus Become A Driver Of Contemporary Capitalism. The Explicit Aim Ofâ 'Trade In Services' Agreementsâ Is To Lock In National Regulations And Policies That Enhance The Profitability Of International Services Markets. They Are Exclusively The Tools Of Contemporary Global Capitalism, Yet Are Represented As The New Pathway For Development. It Is Argued Here, However, Thatâ There Is A Fundamental Contradiction Between The Global Market Model And The
