According to a Legacy spokesperson, it will be "the most in-depth collection of Cash's gospel recordings ever assembled". The country crooner frequently performed gospel songs at his shows, including the famous concerts at Folsom Prison and San Quentin, and he allegedly left his original label, Sun Records, when they wouldn't allow him to perform gospel material. Tracks on the new collection include traditional gospel songs such as 'He Turned The Water Into Wine' and '(There'll Be) Peace in The Valley (For Me)' , as well as Cash originals 'The Preacher Said "Jesus Said"', and the hit written by Carl Perkins, 'Daddy Sang Bass'. Gospel was what Johnny Cash, Luther Perkins, and Marshall Grant originally wanted to record when they auditioned for Sam Phillips in 1954. In 1958, Sun Records' refusal to let Cash record a gospel album-despite his track record of hits-led him to leave for Columbia. This well-chosen package delineates sacred music's ongoing role in Cash's career, beginning with two 1970 performances from his ABC variety show, one featuring longtime Cash friend Rev. Billy Graham. The 1957 Sun tunes include the searing "I Was There When It Happened" and Cash's original "Belshazzar." "He Turned the Water into Wine," "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "That's Enough," and his 1969 gospel hit "Daddy Sang Bass," all from Columbia, are particularly passionate, as is "Far Side Banks of Jordan" (a duet with June Carter Cash) and three never-before-issued performances, 1974's "My Ship W

  • Idioms in the Bible Explained: And, a Key to the Original Gospels

  • Discusses the language and sayings of Jesus, explains idioms, metaphors, and colloquialisms used in the Scriptures, and looks at common customs during
World-renowned Bible translator and commentator George M. Lamsa explains nearly one thousand crucial idioms that will enrich reading of the Old and New Testaments for students and general reader alike. Lamsa, who was raised speaking Aramaic in a community that followed customs largely unchanged since the times of Christ, offers fresh, accurate translations of important idioms, metaphors, and figures of speech found in the Scripture-and provides clear explanations of their meaning of biblical context. Just as Shakespeare, Milton, and Browning wrote in the vernacular for English-speaking people, Moses the prophets, and the apostles wrote for their own people in the plain language of their times, so that even the unlearned might understand God's Word. Over the centuries, inaccurate translations and misunderstandings of customs and concepts have led to difficulties in bringing the biblical message to contemporary English-speaking readers. For example, when a man says to Jesus, "let me bury my father," Lamsa points out that this expression means, "Let me first take care of my father until he dies." Traditionally, scholars assumed that this man's father was dead and that Jesus was not interested in his burial. Lamsa's scholarship offers a more accurate understanding of the intent and spirit of this passage. Idioms in the Bible Explained and a Key to the Original Gospels goes far in correcting such errors that have crept into Biblical scholarship. Obscure and difficult passages from

  • How God Became King: The Forgotten Story of the Gospels

  • Posits that the true central story of the Gospels is the coronation of God through Jesus as the climax of all human history, which sets the groundwork
Foundational: The four gospels come directly fromthe ancient church and are among the primary sourcesfor the church's teachings. Familiar: Since Christian worship services began, areading from the gospels has played a central role. Studied: For over two hundred years scholars havechallenged and defended the central claims of thegospels: miracles, historical accuracy, the divinity ofJesus, and more. But Forgotten: Still, leading Bible scholar N. T.Wright reveals shocking news: We have all forgottenwhat the four gospels are about."Despite centuries of intense and heavy industryexpended on the study of all sorts of features of thegospels," Wright writes, "we have often managed tomiss the main thing that they, all four of them, aremost eager to tell us. What we need is not just a bitof fine-tuning, an adjustment here and there. We needa fundamental rethink about what the gospels aretrying to tell us."What Wright offers is an opportunity to confront thesepowerful texts afresh, as if we are encountering themfor the first time. How God Became King reveals thesurprising, unexpected, and shocking news of thegospels: this is the story of a new king, a new kind ofking, a king who has changed everything, and a kingwho invites us to be part of his new world.

  • The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus's Birth

  • The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus's Birth
In The First Christmas, two of today's top Jesus scholars, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan, join forces to show how history has biased our reading of the nativity story as it appears in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. As they did for Easter in their previous book, The Last Week, here they explore the beginning of the life of Christ, peeling away the sentimentalism that has built up over the last two thousand years around this most well known of all stories to reveal the truth of what the gospels actually say. Borg and Crossan help us to see this well-known narrative afresh by answering the question, "What do these stories mean?" in the context of both the first century and the twenty-first century. They successfully show that the Christmas story, read in its original context, is far richer and more challenging than people imagine.
